Why do we need to update it?

question iconState law requires that “at least once every five years the comprehensive plan shall be reviewed by the local planning commission to determine whether it is advisable to amend the plan.” Virginia Code §15.2-2230.  Our last update was in 2003 so this is our year to get started on revisions!

A lot has changed in our community over the last five years.  Based on your feedback from the phone and mail surveys conducted in late summer 2007, we can tell how attitudes have shifted in relation to changes that have occurred throughout the County.  The update is necessary to assess these new needs, develop solutions for new and long-term challenges, and to plan for new growth while enhancing our existing community.

The Planning Division addresses a variety of hot topic areas during this update process, including population growth, affordable housing, economic development, needs for additional public facilities and services, sustainability, traffic, environmental protection, and more.  We will be looking to you, the citizens of James City County, to help us throughout the process and tell us your dreams and priorities for the future of the County.  The 2008 effort to update the Comprehensive Plan has been titled “Historic Past Sustainable Future”
